Basketball Shooting Practice With a Live Form Coach

Shooting form is built in the quiet shots nobody watches: a hundred free throws in an empty gym. The missing piece has always been someone to tell you what you actually did. Prop your phone up, shoot, and Formanti reads every shot once the follow-through is over: your legs, your set point, your release and how long you held your finish.

It follows your body on your phone, so your video is never uploaded. It does not see the ball or whether the shot goes in, so it tells you about your form, not your percentage. Basketball practice is new and in beta: the ranges are coaching guide values that have not yet been checked against real shooters. Pick a shot below to see exactly what it checks.

No equipment needed. Practise at home. Just do the movement properly in front of your phone: a shadow swing for racquet sports, a rep for lifting. No court, ball, shuttle or weights needed, and a racket or a bar is optional.

How to practise your shooting on your own

  1. Put your phone at chest height 3 to 4 metres away, side-on to you, with your shooting hand nearest to it and room above your hands.
  2. Start with form shooting close to the hoop, or shoot with no ball at all, and take 10 shots at a time.
  3. Film side-on. From the front the phone can count your shots but cannot judge your legs or your release angle.
  4. Read the report: it names the one thing that kept going wrong and gives you a drill for it.

What to work on first

Fix the base of the shot before the finish. A shot that starts in the legs, with the elbow up before the push, gives you a repeatable release; the follow-through is the easiest thing to check and the one most players skip. Do ten slow, clean shots rather than fifty rushed ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can a phone check my basketball shooting form?

It can measure your body: how far your knees bend, how high your elbow is at the set point, whether your arm finishes straight and high, and how long you hold your follow-through. It cannot see the ball, the arc or whether the shot goes in.

Do I need a ball and a hoop?

No. The check is about your body, so form shooting with no ball in a hallway works. A ball and a hoop just make it feel like a real shot.
