Gym Form Check With a Live Coach on Your Phone
Good form is the cheapest way to lift more and get hurt less, and the hardest to judge from the inside. Prop your phone up, do your reps, and Formanti counts them, checks the bottom and the top of every rep, and tells you what to fix while you are still under the bar.
The pose tracking runs on your phone, so your video stays on it. Wherever a position is off, the correct one is drawn in green on your own skeleton. Choose an exercise below to see exactly what it checks.
No equipment needed. Practise at home. Just do the rep properly in front of your phone. Bodyweight squats, push-ups and lunges need nothing at all, and you can check the hinge and press patterns with a very light weight or none: the coach judges your movement, not your kit.
How to check your form on your own
- Put your phone at about hip height, 2 to 3 metres to your side, with your whole body in view.
- Start with a light weight, or none, and watch what the coach says about the bottom and the top of the rep.
- Film from the side for lifts judged by back and hip angles. Head-on cannot see how far your back leans.
- Use the report to find the one position that keeps going wrong, then fix that before adding weight.
What to work on first
Depth and lockout are the two things that matter most on most lifts: how low you get, and whether you finish tall. Start with those, then watch the back angle. Lift lighter than you think for the first sessions, so the coach is judging your form and not your effort.
Lifts you can check
- Deadlift: Check your deadlift setup and lockout: flat back, hips and chest rising together.
- Squat: Check your squat depth and torso angle: hips to knee height, chest up, full lockout.
- Push-up: Check your push-up: elbows near 90 degrees, a straight body line, a full lockout.
- Lunge: Check your lunge: front knee near a right angle, torso upright, standing fully up.
- Overhead press: Check your overhead press: hands fully overhead at lockout, ribs down, no lean back.
- Bent-over row: Check your bent-over row: hinged near 45 degrees, torso still, elbow pulled past the ribs.
- Romanian deadlift: Check your Romanian deadlift: hips back, soft knees, torso hinging toward parallel.
Frequently asked questions
Can a phone camera really check my lifting form?
It can measure joint angles at the bottom and the top of a rep well enough to flag clear problems like depth or an incomplete lockout. It cannot see a rounding back or judge bar path. Treat it as a second pair of eyes.
Is it safe to rely on it?
It is a guide, not a coach or a physiotherapist. Use it to check basics, keep the weights sensible, and get a person to look at anything that hurts.
